Business Strategies for a New World

My name is Christopher Howard, and I am a “first year” Business Administration-General Studies major. My experience with technology is basic, consisting mainly of Windows and Microsoft software usage. When I think of Social Media, I am reminded of a popular Twix commercial, where a man quickly uses blogging as an excuse to convince a girl to come back to his apartment (watch below).

When I first saw this commercial, I didn’t even know what blogging was (though I laughed anyway). I am taking this course because I don’t like to miss opportunities. I see this class as a golden opportunity for me to hone my tech skills, which are currently my least marketable quality, and have fun along the way.

One of my favorite companies is Amazon, because they helped make e-commerce what it is today. I am an avid fan of their e-book reader, the Amazon Kindle, as it started making e-books popular and accessible. Now, many other companies, notably Sony and Barnes and Noble, have flooded the market with their own e-book readers. Still, I remain loyal to the original. I think that e-books are the future of reading and print. One day, all students will  be downloading their textbooks into their e-book readers. No paper, no shipping, no heavy book bags, and lower costs.

I agree with my son, e-books are the way of the future. I praise the convenience and portability of these devices as I believe they will help to encourage more reading in general.
My concern, however, is that ,as a result of the availabilty of technological advances such as e-mail, texting and blogging, people ,especially youth who are the most frequent users of these formats, will either never learn or simply forget the use of more traditional forms of communication along with their requisite rules, grammar and syntax.
