Business Strategies for a New World

Day of DifferenceHey guys, my name is Meredith Jones and I’m a freshman here at the University of Florida.  Right now I’m working on completing a major in Business Administration General Studies with an area of specialization in International Studies and a minor in Portuguese.

Last semester I volunteered for Day of Difference with two of my friends at Alachua Elementary teaching third graders about basic business concepts which was a lot of fun, I must say.  I am a member of both the International Business Society and the Entrepreneurship Club.  Hopefully by next semester I will secure a directorship position in one of those.  I also competed in the semi-final round of the SIFE Ethics in Business Competition which entailed presenting a business plan to a “board of directors” that not only protected the company’s profits but also incorporated ethical principles.

As for my background in technology, I used to be an avid facebook user but it’s my new year’s resolution to cut back to only checking it once a day.  Unfortunately, I have an iPhone that likes to take up a lot of my time by enticing me to do extremely unproductive things.  I have a twitter account, but I have never really used it before.  To be honest, I only made one because Mark Rush the Microeconomics professor had one for ECO2013 that was supposed to update me on exam dates, etc. and I figured why not? I am very familiar with the windows and linux operating systems, but have never done any programming.  I have been surrounded by technology since I was a child because my Dad had a software company called Emagisoft that almost went public before the technology crash back in 2000 which gave me access to all the latest technological goodies.

I feel like the majority of our generation is naturally inclined to be able to use technology because if you think about it … good technology is designed to be easily used.  All it takes is the motivation to learn how to use it, a few hours to mess around with it, the power of google, and you should be able to eventually manipulate it for whatever purpose you intend to use it for.  This course, however, will hopefully give me the motivation to go out there and use technology along with my entrepreneurship skills to start my own company.
