Texting in today’s society has become a staple for communication. It has nearly replaced calling, and is a quick and easy way to communicate. However, today, texting can be used for more than just an “lol” or “ttyl”, by texting HAITI to 90999, you can donate $10 towards Haitian Relief.
Our project focused on the concept of creating value using only sticky notes. At first this task seemed daunting and ridiculous but after much brain storming, our group came up with an idea to create awareness about a portal to donations. Everyone is aware of the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12th, and many want to help but don’t know how. Our project helped make available an easy way for everyone to donateĀ a reasonable amount within seconds. We covered Christopher Howard with sticky notes, each with the words “Text ‘HAITI’ to 90999″ written on them. We then walked around campus and allowed students to take sticky notes off of Chris.
While this idea may not seem as extreme as other groups ideas, our point was well made and well received. Sticky notes are traditionally used as reminders, and in this case, they served their purpose in a big way. By having something tangible to hold on to, students were more likely to actually text and donate to Haitian relief.

Hey Digital Frontiers. My name is Rockford Dias and I am a first year Marketing major. Ever since joining the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) club in high school I have been extremely passionate about business. It quickly became my career choice and my dream job as well. I feel that business is the one area of learning that you have to remain constantly aware and constantly on your feet, which is far more exciting to me then any science. Problems come at you from everywhere and since I believe I work well under pressure, I feel that I am well qualified for this field.
Outside this class I am truly only active in PBL which is the college chapter of the FBLA club. I am also in SHO, mainly because all honors students are in automatically. I am really hoping to join FLA and Florida Blue Key as I have a dream to be the one in charge of all the Gator Growl funding in 2013. Outside that, the rest of my floor and I have seemingly become obsessed with Mega Monopoly… For those not familiar, Mega Monopoly has a little more properties than regular monopolies and is about 1,000 times more fun. Unfortunately the game is extremely broken, and anyone who owns the orange monopoly, including the feared Tennessee Avenue, automatically wins…
Now that I’ve officially nerd-ed out, my background with technology stops with just basic computer skills. I took that idiotic CGS class but I think I might have regressed because of it. I have some uncanny ability to fix general problems with the computer but its usually just luck. My current use of social media really just ends with Facebook. I have never really been interested in blogging or Twitter. I hope that this class can give me a great insight into e-commerce and the new channels of social media that are eventually going to revolutionize the marketing and advertising industry.
