citizens co-opAs best illustrated in the The Universe of Knowledge pie chart shown in class, I’m starting to comprehend “what I don’t know that I don’t know” and open my eyes to the limitless opportunities with regard specifically to the Internet and social media marketing. Did I realize that I didn’t know about the significance of the Domain Name System (DNS)? Nope. Did I understand that a mere 15 years ago the first commercial Websites were formed? No way. Who stops to consider that the purpose and success of social media marketing rests on friends, fun, and conversation? And really, you can “listen” to the Web to get real-time feedback on how often something is mentioned?? So cool.

Now on to another question: what does all that have to do with food and races? Well, such an understanding of social media and the power of dialogue hopefully will aid me in my pursuit of promoting Citizens Co-Op, an up-and-coming, cooperatively-owned food market in the Gainesville area dedicated to providing fresh, socially responsible foods. I’m thrilled to take on this project partly because one fun event in particular that we will be involved with is a bike race to build community awareness of the co-op. Want a grocer with fresh, local foods and the chance to challenge your friends in a Gainesville-based bike race? Check out all that Citizens Co-Op has to offer. Trust me, you will be hearing much more about them soon.

SavannahGMy name is Savannah Gorman and I’m a third-year Economics major (Liberal Arts and Sciences) with minors in Arabic and International Relations. My main passions are reading, playing soccer, finding cool little off-the-wall places to eat in Gainesville, languages, watching great movies, and travelling. Outside of the classroom, I’m super-involved with RecSports (I’m a soccer referee!) and Honors Ambassadors (where I happen to be the Intramural Chair). If it wasn’t apparent with that last sentence, I love intramural sports here at UF. Not to brag, but I do happen to have won seven of the prized Intramural Champion Tshirts, all either in Indoor or Outdoor soccer, and I feel very strongly that my flag football one is going to be coming soon… I also tutor Beginning Arabic so if anyone is looking for some help, just hit me up! <more>

My background in technology is not as strong as I’d like it to be. I’m proficient in basic things like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign (thank you, high school yearbook class), I have a Facebook account that I check far too often, and I browse YouTube occasionally, but overall, I feel like I’m lacking in other skills like creating Websites and knowing HTML that would be incredibly important in various business settings. What I hope to get out of this class is practical knowledge about social media and the technological strategies/tools behind making it successful, and by the end of this class, I would love to consider myself truly Internet-savvy. Especially in a liberal arts field, I think having technological skills and experience can really set someone apart. That be said, one of my favorite companies currently is Target. It is much less technological than most of the other companies mentioned by others, but I am so intrigued by it because 1) my friend just got an incredibly cool marketing job at their headquarters in Minneapolis, and 2) because it was one of the first companies whose marketing made me think, “This is brilliant and gorgeous marketing!” Their TV commercials were so aesthetically pleasing and unconventional, and I really noticed how good marketing can draw someone in.
